Usually the opener. Tell a short story, not your full resume.
Structure (about 2 minutes)
1. Present: who you are now (student / fresher / switcher / 0–2 YOE DE) 2. Past: relevant coursework, internship, projects, or prior role 3. Proof: 1–2 concrete DE-flavored examples (SQL, pipelines, Spark, quality) 4. Future: why Data Engineering and why this role
Fresher-honest advice
You do not need production FAANG experience. Internship ETL, college projects, personal lakehouse demos, or LakeBench-style practice are valid if you explain what you owned and what you learned.
Avoid: listing every tool. Prefer 2–3 skills with outcomes.
Example outline (fresher)
> I'm a recent CS graduate focused on Data Engineering. In my internship I built a daily sales pipeline: extract from Postgres, clean in Python, load to a warehouse, and schedule with Airflow. On a personal project I modeled orders into a star schema and wrote dbt tests for nulls and uniqueness. I'm strongest in SQL and Python, and I'm actively practicing PySpark and pipeline design. I'm excited about this role because I want to build reliable pipelines that analysts and products can trust.
STAR reminder (use for almost every later behavioral)
Interviewers want stories. Prepare answers with STAR:
- Situation: context (team, pipeline, stakeholder)
- Task: your responsibility
- Action: what *you* did (tools + decisions)
- Result: outcome + what you learned (numbers if you have them)
Keep pitch under ~2 minutes, then invite: "Happy to go deeper on any project."
