Star schema optimizes for analytics consumption: simple joins, clear grain, BI-friendly facts and dimensions.
Data Vault optimizes for enterprise integration and audit: many sources, insert-heavy history, resilient to source change.

Star / marts (facts + dims) --> BI| | Data Vault | Star | |---|---|---| | Primary audience | Integration / EDW teams | Analysts, BI tools | | Shape | Hubs, links, satellites | Facts + dimensions | | Change handling | Satellite history by design | SCD on dimensions | | Query simplicity | Harder (many joins) | Easier | | Agility to add sources | High | Medium (remodel marts) |
Practical pattern
Use Vault (or a raw/silver integration model) as the system of record for integrated history; publish conformed stars for reporting. Freshers should not force Vault into every take-home if the interviewer only asked for a sales mart.
Interview tip
> "Vault for multi-source integration and audit; star for BI. Many platforms do both in layers."
