In data engineering, APIs are a common source or sink: pull SaaS data in, or expose curated data out to products.

raw zone → transforms → martsIngestion concerns
- Auth (API keys, OAuth), secrets in a vault
- Rate limits and pagination
- Incremental sync (
updated_since) vs full dump - Schema drift when the vendor adds fields
- Idempotent loads (upsert by vendor id)
Serving concerns
- Do not let every dashboard hit the warehouse ad hoc forever
- Sometimes a thin API caches aggregates for apps
Interview tip: "APIs are integration contracts." Mention pagination, rate limits, and incremental sync to show you have built real pulls, not only CSV drops.
