The short answer
Azure Synapse Analytics includes two distinct T-SQL query engines designed for complementary analytics needs: Serverless SQL Pools and Dedicated SQL Pools.
Feature Serverless SQL Pool Dedicated SQL Pool
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Compute Model Fully serverless, on-demand Provisioned (DWUs)
Data Location External ADLS Gen2 files Internal 60 distributions
Billing Per TB processed ($5/TB) Fixed hourly rate per DWU
Startup Time Instant (always available) Minutes to resume if paused
Primary Use Case Lake exploration, ad-hoc High-concurrency BI, martsSynapse Serverless SQL Pool
Serverless SQL is an on-demand distributed query engine. There are no virtual clusters to size, provision, or pause. You query files sitting directly in Azure Data Lake Storage (in Parquet, Delta Lake, or CSV formats) using open T-SQL syntax:
SELECT TOP 100 *
FROM OPENROWSET(
BULK 'https://mystorage.dfs.core.windows.net/lake/raw/*.parquet',
FORMAT = 'PARQUET'
) AS [result];You pay strictly for the data processed by your queries (currently $5.00 per terabyte, check current pricing). When no queries run, your cost is zero.
Synapse Dedicated SQL Pool
Dedicated SQL Pool is an enterprise data warehouse. You provision a fixed capacity of DWUs that runs continuously. Data is ingested into structured tables managed across 60 distributions with clustered columnstore indexes.
Dedicated pools offer predictable performance, local NVMe caching, transaction logging, materialized views, and granular workload management. Use Dedicated pools for high-concurrency production BI reporting where hundreds of users demand sub-second dashboard responses.
How to decide between them
Choose Serverless SQL when your team needs to inspect raw data lakes, validate schema contracts, or run lightweight ad-hoc queries without paying for idle cluster uptime. Choose Dedicated SQL Pools when you require dedicated compute capacity, strict query concurrency queues, and sub-second query latency over enterprise .
