Mentoring juniors or peers

Easybehavior-14
mentoringteachingcollaborationSTAR

Question

Describe a time you mentored or helped a junior / peer grow technically.

Solution

Mentoring for freshers often means peer teaching, not managing a team.

What good mentoring looks like

  • Diagnose the blocker (concept vs tooling)
  • Teach the pattern, don't only paste the fix
  • Pair on one example, then let them try
  • Share checklists / docs
  • Follow up once

STAR outline

Situation: Classmate struggled with window functions for "latest order per customer."

Action: I drew a tiny 6-row table, showed ROW_NUMBER vs GROUP BY, and had them solve a second variant alone. I also linked a short note I wrote.

Result: They solved the next homework independently and later helped another student.

Fresher-honest advice

Tutoring, code-reviewing a peer PR, or explaining your project in a study group all count.

Interview tip: Emphasize enabling independence, not doing their work.
