Pick a real, non-fatal weakness + improvement plan. Avoid clichés like "I work too hard."
Good weakness pattern
1. Name a specific skill/habit gap 2. Show self-awareness of impact 3. Describe concrete improvement 4. Show recent progress
Strong DE examples
- Public speaking / explaining designs to non-engineers → practice with STAR stories and diagrams
- Jumping into coding before clarifying requirements → now write assumptions first
- Limited production Spark tuning → studying shuffle/partition patterns and practicing on sample jobs
- Over-documenting vs shipping → time-box docs to a one-page runbook
Example outline
> I used to clarify requirements too late, which caused rework. Now I start with three questions: grain, primary key, and SLA. In my last project that cut a full rebuild.
Avoid
Fake weaknesses, personal medical issues, or "I'm bad at teamwork" without a fix story.
Interview tip: Keep it under 60–90 seconds.
