Aim for growth that fits this role, not an exit plan away from DE.
Healthy answer shape
1. Near-term: strong IC fundamentals (SQL, pipelines, quality, cloud basics) 2. Mid-term: own critical pipelines / domain (e.g. payments, growth analytics) 3. Optional: mentor juniors or deepen Spark/streaming specialty 4. Tie growth to *this company's* data maturity
Example outline
> In 3–5 years I want to be a trusted Data Engineer who owns reliable warehouse domains end to end: modeling, quality, and on-call for those pipelines. I'd like to mentor newer engineers and deepen streaming/CDC skills if the product needs it. I'm not rushing into management; I want deep craft first.
Fresher tip
"Still learning; aiming to be solid mid-level DE" is fine. Avoid "I want your manager's job in 18 months."
Interview tip: Align with the team's actual ladder if you know it.
